My Skincare Routine
As a teen and young adult, my skincare routine was non-existent, despite suffering from frequent breakouts. Most days, I removed my make-up and cleansed my face with a generic product and warm face cloth. I would describe my skin type as sensitive-dry-and-rebellious it reacts easily to skin products, changes in diet and exposure to different environments. Yet, I settled for convenience and used products that could be found at the grocery store.
At 30, skincare is now a priority for me.
What I’ve learnt about implementing a skincare routine
Don’t believe the hype. Be patient and find what works well with your skin. Stay consistent but don’t be afraid to take breaks if you need to.
Take your makeup off. When the day is done, take your bra off, wash your face, and relax. That doesn’t always mean after dinner, if your day wraps up at noon, give your skin a break.
Hydrate. Drink all the water. There are days I want nothing more than an another cup of coffee, but staying hydrated from the inside out has positive effects on my mind, body, and skin. Feeling blah about drinking more water? Get fancy by adding some fresh fruit or herbs!
Take your time. Washing my face and appreciating the process has become part of my rhythm. There’s something relaxing to me about cleansing my skin in the morning and setting my intentions for the day or taking some time to process the end of a productive day. It allows me to draw a line between the work day and the relaxing evening.
Skip the chemicals. I was drawn to Neal’s Yard Remedies because their products are certified organic with 100% natural ingredients. Neal’s Yard Remedies is cruelty-free and never tests on animals. Plus, their products don’t contain any of the following harmful chemicals; synthetic fragrances, silicones, parabens, phthalates, mineral oils, DEA, EDTA, nano technology, genetically modified organisms (GMO), petroleum or BHT.
This is what my skincare routine looks like now
DAILY
Cleanse / Rose Facial Wash: Is a gently foaming cleanser that leaves my skin cleansed and refreshed without feeling parched.
Tone / Re-hydrating Rose Toner: Re-balances my skin's delicate pH, removing any grime or cleanser left behind and prepares my skin for moisture.
Facial Oil / Oil on your skin? I had my reservations, then researched that skin needs oil to maintain a healthy balance, otherwise it gets too dry which can cause breakouts and wrinkles. Using facial oil and moisturizer can help keep moisture in the skin while also protecting it from environmental stresses. I’m looking forward to trying this Rejuvenating Frankincense Facial Oil.
Moisturizer / Frankincense Nourishing Cream: I opt for the rich nourishing cream as my skin tends to be dry and when combined with our climate here in Calgary, my skin needs some extra loving.
WEEKLY
Scrub / Honey & Orange Facial Scrub: 1-2x per week I use this scrub to exfoliate my dead skin cells and clogged pores. It’s great for all skin types.
Mask / 1-2x per week to hydrate. Who doesn’t love a good mask? Sunday night spa sessions are essential and can be intensive but a wonderful way to wind down before the start of a new week. I’ve also found a little self-care check-in on Thursday does wonders to help keep my zen on until Sunday. When crazy mom life ensues, a mask and multi-tasking never hurts - masking and laundry anyone?
